Metrological verification of scales is essential for anyone who uses weighing equipment to carry out commercial transactions.
1 Do I need a scale with metrological verification?
If you use your scales for commercial transactions, you are required by law to verify your scales. Verification ensures that your scales are displaying the correct weight and allows you to sell products by weight.
If you only use the scale for internal control, there is no need to perform metrological verification.
2 Do I need to buy a new scale with Metrological Verification or can I verify mine?
It depends on the supplier of the scale. Barcelbal performs the initial verification before the weighing equipment leaves the factory or afterwards.
However, there are scales that must be purchased with verification, as it is not possible to verify them afterwards. In other words, if you later wish to carry out commercial transactions based on weight, you will have to purchase a new scale with verification.
3 Who can perform the metrological verification on my scale?
Barcelbal is accredited to perform the Initial Verification of weighing equipment. Periodic Verifications are performed annually by the Metrological Verification Body in your region.
4 Do I need to service my scales before the periodic inspection?
It is not mandatory to have your scales checked before the Periodic Verification, but if you do not do so, there is a greater chance that the weighing instrument will fail.
At Barcelbal, we recommend that our customers request our VP Review and Monitoring Service to ensure that the equipment passes the verification.
With this service, our technician will visit your premises to review the weighing equipment and will be present during the verification carried out by the Metrological Verification Body.
5 What happens if my scale fails the periodic verification?
If the scale fails the Periodic Verification, it is necessary to request a review of the weighing equipment from the scale supplier and schedule a new service with the Metrological Verification Body in your region.
6 What happens if I do not check my balance?
If you do not perform periodic checks on your scales, you are committing an offence punishable by a fine (Article 13 of Decree-Law No. 291/90 of 20 September).
7 How often do I need to check my scales?
Periodic verification is carried out annually, unless otherwise specified.
